Climate, Topography, and Population

Climate: (Tundra) Generally the climate on the Kamchatka Peninsula is continental. That would mean that the summers are pretty warm and the winters are cool.
Population: There is actually a growing trend on the peninsula of winter sports, which tourism going all year round.
Topography: The Kamchatka River is surrounded by 160 volcanoes and 29 of them are still live.

Feasible Energy Options

Nuclear Power Plant: On the Kamchatka Peninsula there is a naval base. In order to provide sustainable electricity and heat supplies, they made a nuclear power plant. So, another nuclear power plant is definitely feasible in the area.
Hydroelectric: The Kamchatka River runs all throughout the peninsula. A dam could be placed along the river in order to provide hydroelectric energy to the people on the peninsula.
Solar and wind: These options are feasible. I would not directly choose these though because Kamchatka doesn't receive an enormous amount of sunlight nor wind, so it would be smarter to use a different option, but if we had to provide energy this way, it could work.
Natural gas: There is a significant amount of natural gas on the western shelf.

Best Option

I think the best option for the Kamchatka Peninsula would be natural gas. Gazprom, whexternal image Natural-gas.jpgich means gas industry, developed fields on the western half. These fields will increase gas deliveries as well as supply gas to other consumers in the territory. One of the biggest reasons I think this could seriously benefit the peninsula is because it could be able to annually produce 750 million cubic meters of gas. All of this natural gas could help boom the job industry on the peninsula. A great way to promote this could be to explain to society how if someone is without a job, that problem could be solved. Also, a ton of people are worried about the environment. Well another way to promote this could be explain how natural gas lowers greenhouse gas emissions and also is the cleanest type of energy. Also, it can improve the living standards there and drive economic growth. Natural gas is a safe an affordable fuel that could definitely be able to heat and cool homes which could lead to cooking the food.

Building and Manufacturing

When we build and manufacture the good, we have to make sure we are extremely careful so that way none of the society is impacted in a bad way by the natural gas. We have to provide strict laws and regulations that if someone was to be doing something the wrong way that could be hurting the society, they would be in a heap of trouble. Natural gas could impact many lives wrongfully if people do not follow rules and are not careful, but if they are it is extremely safe.


Topography does influence the usage of natural gas. With natural gas you have to be very careful that it does not get into the water ways. The Kamchatka River flows all through the peninsula so if Natural Gas got into the river, it would create a huge issue for them. That is something we have to be very careful about. Since the climate is tundra, it has an unusual combination of glaciers, volcanoes, snowfields, which has rich flora and fauna. It has the 160 volcanoes, 29 of which are alive.

What is it?
- Global Warming can scientifically be stated as the increase of our planet's average surface temperature due to effect of greenhouse gases. Greenhouses gases are gases that contribute to the "greenhouse effect" by absorbing infrared radiation. An example of this would be carbon dioxide. In non scientific terms, global warming is basically, when it gets much hotter when it isn't really supposed to, or when the temperature, by a decent amount, exceeds the average.

Why is it important? What impact does it have on the world?
- Global Warming has become, over the last decade or so, one of the hottest topics (no pun intended) of discussion or debate even. Over the years, global warming has been increasing, which inevitably is very bad for Earth. The temperature will just keep rising and rising and it will be too much for us too handle or stop. Scientists now, have been trying to slow the warming down, and hopefully eventually reverse it. Some important changed that have been caused by global warming are heat waves, sea levels are rising, and glaciers are melting and countries in need of certain glaciers will be at a loss for water. You might not think these are that big of deals at the moment, but things like this and even bigger problems will arise if something doesn't happen. Now usually when people refer to global warming they are talking about how hot it is when it shouldn't be. Well certain studies have shown, that in some areas it could actually be much colder than the average temperature. That is just as much a problem. Basically, this type of issue has a huge impact on habitat, the ecosystem, ocean levels, and much more. Severe droughts and huge rainstorms are becoming increasingly common. As you can see global warming is extremely important in how it affects us and it has a huge impact on the world, but not in a good way.

My interest, gut reaction, and connection?
- I have actually been interested with the topic of Global Warming ever since I was in elementary school. In 5th grade, one of my classmates (Chloe Schultz) did not believe in global warming. We actually probably discussed it at least once a week within the class for a good amount of time. I usually did not really understand nor care, but then our teacher said that we would have a debate on it. Chloe, and some of her friends gathered up some research and went against us, who said Global Warming was real, and did our own research on it. It was a very heated debate and made me very interested on the topic. I have sort of been keeping up to date about what is going on with it. I realized a while ago that it is actually a world-wide debate going on about whether it is real or not. It is not just about that though. The people who believe it is real are pushing for ways to slow it down and eventually reverse it. The opposite side, who don't believe in it, say that in trying to do this for something that is not even real, it will be hurting the economy and therefore hurting society as a whole. That is basically why I chose this topic and why I am so interested. My gut reaction is that I do think it is real and I do believe we need to really figure out a way to reverse this and save Earth from all of the terrible things that Global Warming could cause in the future. My connection to it is that ​I have been interested in this topic for a very long time now and I have been able to further connect myself to the topic, and help myself understand what is actually going on in the world.

Waste Entry #2


In Kamchatka peninsula, there is a very large volcano in the center if the peninsula. The volcano can be very essential in the disposal of waste because it could also be used as an incinerator. Using this volcano as an incinerator would save a ton of money for the community. Since we are using this volcano as an incinerator we also have to make sure we don't put toxins in it just like you would do with an incinerator, such as plastics. As a developing area, there will be a decent amount of manufacturing in the area. Because of this manufacturing, there could be a scare of hazardous waste. Since this could potentially happen, we have enforced new laws to protect our environment from the use of hazardous waste. Also, since we are developing, we would like to get our community and environment off to a good start. We are going to try to recycle, reuse, reduce, and compost everything that we can. For the things that are not trash, we have to make sure we do all of these things to have a healthy environment.

What we are going to do is set up 2 MRF's on both sides of the peninsula and that way we can carefully sort the trash and make sure each type of waste is then categorized correctly. Personally, for this what we are going to try and not do is use landfills, because as a smaller area, the use of landfills will take up space and we cannot really afford to give up to much space. We will have a couple of landfills though because the actual trash that is found by the MRF does need to go somewhere but this way, it is a whole lot less then it would have been before. Some waste our community will see is the municipal solida waste, which is produced by us. The MRF's are the best idea I think for this area because it sorts all of the different kinds of trash piece by piece and then it categorizes each object into the correct place. The plastics that were thrown in the trash still have a chance to be recycled because of this process. Aside from MRF's though, everyone in the society should still try their best to reduce, recycle, and reuse the objects that could be affiliated with those three waste options. The best choice of those three would be to reduce. If they reduce waste in general, it creates less trash that goes to landfills, and less trash that is incinerated. Also it is has been known nationwide that reducing is always the best choice.
I think for the Kamchatka Peninsula, the best way to get the people to start recycling, reusing, and especially reducing is to show them how easy it can be if you put a little effort into it. We need to get a group of people together to sort of make a skit and then act out a normal day as a group of different people. I think they should try to make it a comedy as well to keep the audience entertained but at the same time show them during the skit, the ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle, how to do all three things, and do it in a way that will make the audience do it on a daily basis. Now, obviously not everyone in the society will be watching this ski so that is just a creative way to get it across to the people that do see it. For the people who don't I think we should create some fun and creative posters promoting people to do these three things. On the poster we should creatively show them the easiness to do them and how everyone can chip in and do it.

In the Kamchatka Peninsula this is a nearby lake called Karymsky Lake. Right near this lake there is a huge volcano called the Karymsky Volcano. This volcano can actually be of use because it could be used as an incinerator like I stated above. This volcano though is also considered topography which in this case definitely influences our decisions since it is able to provide the sames uses as an incinerator. At the same time the peninsula isn't to big of a place and the volcano doesn't help with the amount of space available to deal

with the trash. Like I said before with the landfills, we simply don't have enough room to have every single thing go to a landfill, which is why we need to make sure waste goes to the correct place. According to, it is about 750 miles (1,200 km) long north-south and about 300 miles (480 km) across at its widest; its area is approximately 140,000 square miles (370,000 square km). As you can see it is not all that big of a place so we have to be careful.

Some laws that we were and still are considering is making the community pay a fine for every 10 things that could have been reused, recycled or reduced. It could be an extremely difficult process but because of the fairly smaller population we are trying to figure out ways we can do it. An idea could be that when the trash trucks go around to collect the municipal waste cans, it is thrown into a certain section of the garbage truck that is labeled. When the trash is taken to the MRF's we will be able to see what kind of waste each household is placing into the municipal waste cans. The fines would go up a little every single time it happens to a household. We do understand though a lot of things could be by accident and there could be other reasons certain things are there so the fines aren't too bad to start off with, and they are just enough to hopefully make people pay a lot more attention to what they are throwing away and where they place it. As stated before, this process is extremely complicated which is still why it has not been made a law. It would be very difficult to have so many garbage trucks to have so many sections in each to accommodate for every single home in the area. Hopefully we are able to figure it out though in order to get waste to where it needs to be.

With this law it also looks for hazardous waste with the daily garbage checks. Citizens already know how bad hazardous waste is and that it should never be a problem. To enforce the issue if it were ever to occur though, this law would apply to that too, but personally I don't really see hazardous waste becoming an issue for us since the treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste is already regulated under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act according to These laws and ways to promote reusing, recycling, and reducing, I think are great ways to better the peninsula for the future and preserve our area in the long run no matter how long it takes to get there, we just have to be patient and let it do its work, and if everything pans out as planned it will help us greatly for the future.

Waste Entry #1


Composting and Recycling in US cities: Seattle, Portland, Dallas
Dallas, Seattle and Portland all compost and recycle in different ways then the rest of the U.S. cities.

What is it?

First, Dallas has even gone as far as making this huge plan that says they will have the city recycling all of its garbage by the year 2040! That is crazy compared to all of the other cities just normal recycling strategies. Dallas has not yet put in place this hopeful plan, but this idea was set on August 22. Apparently, Dallas is only the 2nd city in all of Texas to propose such a plan like this that could change the environment completely. The plan in Dallas states, according to, "Redirect 84 percent of the trash that currently heads to landfills...notes that “Zero Waste” refers to an effort to recycle or reuse material whenever possible...the remaining 16 percent of solid waste is material that cannot currently be recycled or reused."

​Next, in Seattle, they are taking stuff like food scraps and yard waste and then turning all of it into compost. How it works is, after that stuff goes in, 2 months later it then emerges as a huge mountain as compost! That compost is then sold by the bag at garden centers throughout the Pacific Northwest by Cedar Grove composting. According to, "The waste is ground up, piled up, aerated, dried, and sifted." Seattle has a long list of things that are mandatory to recycle and now they are also adding food waste. Nationally, we average around 30% of recycled material and in Seattle alone, they are averaging an amazing 44%! Seattle's goal by 2012 is to reach 60% and then 72% by 2025.

Portland is actually considered a sustainability and green building movement leader in the United States. In Portland there is something called the Portland Bureau of Transportation, which develops, according to, "Cost effective methods to recycle materials generated when performing street maintenance operations." Just like Seattle, Portland has set a similar goal for their recycling. They are trying to accomplish the goal of 75% recycled material by the year 2015.

Why is it important? What impact does it have on the world?

What Seattle, Portland, and Dallas is doing is incredibly important to this world and greatly impacts it. By recycling you are taking these used or waste products and then producing whole new products. When we recycle it greatly helps the environment. It is basically saving the Earth. Everyone knows that paper comes from trees and every day more and more trees are being cut down. With the recycling process it will greatly lessen the number of trees that are being cut down. I also know that when you have raw materials, which come from our natural resources, they should also always be recycled because it obviously preserves our environment. Besides the ways I have listed, recycling helps the world and environment in so many amazing ways, without it, life will be over before we know it. We have to keep recycling to save our environment. From what I have explained about the three cities, you can gather that they are going above and beyond to try and do exactly that and that is why what they are doing is extremely important and how it impacts the world.

Overall what is my interest? What is my gut reaction? How does it connect to me?

Because of my parents, I have actually always been fascinated with recycling. My parents have always enforced the rule to me and my siblings to always recycle. She has told us many times how much it greatly impacts us and the world around us. That is mainly the reason I have become so interested in the topic of recycling. I am really glad I am interested in it because it makes me feel good that I can do what I can and do my part to help the environment. My gut reaction to what these cities doing is amazed. I am so happy that cites like these are out there trying to do all they can do help the environment and that they really actually want to do it. Without cities like these, we would all have zero hope to help our environment so I am very glad that we have that in the United States and to say that people actually really do care. Like i said in the beginning my parents have always recycled in my house. That is really why this topic connects to me so much. Every single thing my parents see that is recyclable, they make sure every single time that it is recycled. Every Wednesday, I take the trash from my house out to the curb so it can be collected in the morning. We have 2 bins that I always take out, which are blue and brown. The brown one is normal trash and the blue one is recyclables. Every time i take them out, the blue trash can is always filled either to the very top or is over flowing and I am not exaggerating the slightest. It amazes me how much one household can recycle. If every house could do that, our environment and earth would be helped greatly.

Entry #2 Water Unit

My location is 57 degrees North and 160 degrees East. This location represents the Kamchatka Peninsula. Fortunately for them, they receive up to 2,700 mm or 110 inches of precipitation per year. As you can see the Kamchatka Peninsula experience very heavy rainfalls per year. On the east coast, it is pretty much rain-drenched and heavily glaciated. On the interior valley, it is much drier and more continental, so as you can see there is considerable variation between the two. The amount of water that the Kamchatka Peninsula receives can be both good and bad. It can obviously provide a surplus of water for the people but at the same time cause more flooding and more room for it to be polluted. There are many ways though, that we can solve both of those issues.

One of the major problems in this area is the amount of water being poured upon the area per year. As I stated before, they receive around 110 inches of precipitation per year which could possibly cause a lot of flooding in the area. Something that could be used is rain barrels. Rain barrels are used as a cistern to hold rainwater. Kamchatka is fine in terms of money so rain barrels are both cost effective and also very useful to reduce flooding by collecting the water.

Because there is so much rain, the runoff from the precipitation is more likely to be much dirtier from the surfacewater runoff. A possible solution to this issue is to build natural drainage systems. The drainage systems would be able to collect this dirty surface water runoff. After that happens, the systems then release it, at a slow pace, back into the world. The most famous form of this would be wetlands. Wetlands are definitely the most efficient and most used around the world. The wetlands would be able to collect the water, then filter it through and absorb the dirty water and its pollutants. Wetlands also do
something where they take the groundwater and then actually release it as freshwater which could be used by the community.

Forestation is another great solution for this specific area and possible issue. Forestation is the planting of trees over a wide area. This solution would also be a great way to steadily reduce the possible flooding by the precipitation. Because of increasing urbanization, there could possibly not be enough rooms to build wetlands or other natural drainage basins so then forestation could be the back up plan.

110 inches of rain per year. That is what you call a lot of water. A great way for us to inherit some money is to use our solutions of reducing flooding such as rain barrels, take a lot of the water and either use it for our own benefits or sell it. By selling the water it give our country a whole new level of money. Conveniently, Kamchatka lies right next to The northern part of the Pacific Ocean. After getting all of this money from the selling of the water we could then use the money and spend it on desalination. Desalination would drastically help our water supply. Desalination is the removal of salt, especially from salt water, so we could use it with the Pacific Ocean, right next to us.

This might not even ever be necessary if the reducing of the flooding works which enables us to get money and then get all of the freshwater by using desalination, but if it is ever needed we could also use the money to buy dual-flush toilets and place them all over the community which would save a ton of water. Dual-flush toilets are toilets that flush half the amount of the normal amount when pee. Depending on if you go #1 or #2 you can choose the specific button assigned for each, and that will determine how much money to flush down.

Something that is extremely common around the world, that could really make sense in our area because of the amount of rain we receive each year is an aquifer. The aquifers would very much be able to supply the people above with plenty of water.

All of these solutions are ways we can reduce the flooding from the ridiculous amount of rain by rain barrels, forestation, and natural drainage systems, and also provide the people with the freshwater they need by using desalination, selling the water, dual flush toilets, and aquifers. Our community seems to look pretty promising water wise moving forward.

Mercury in water can be a huge problem to the modern world. As first found in Japan in 1956, a disease called Minimata happens from people drinking water that contains mercury in it. According to, "the cases of organic mercury poisoning that had been known prior to Minamata Disease occurred as the result of the direct poisoning of those who were engaged in organic-mercury handling occupations or those who took it in accidentally." I think this disease occurring from mercury in water is extremely important because people in the world today are being harmed from this mercury and we have to do something about it. I really found this topic interesting because I am fascinated by diseases and harmful things that are happening from everyday things. Also, people simply don't know about this mercury in the water and we should help them be able to notice it when they see it. There aren't really benefits to this in this case but it is extremely dangerous and I think we should maybe pay more attention to it. As you can see from the picture above it looks like this disease could be extremely severe and painful for the victims. Specifically, this problem of mercury in the water doesn't have any relation to me, I just found the whole topic of this very fascinating, so I wanted to share what I have now learned about this issue.


My location is 57 degrees North and 160 degrees East. This is the Kamchatka Peninsula which is located in Russia. Kamchatka's climate is decidedly continental with cool winter and warm summers. Summer and autumn months are by far the most popular (June-October) when maximum temperatures range from 15C (59F) to 30C (86F), but a growing trend in winter sports keeps tourism pulsing year-round.

In my community there is a lake nearby called Karymsky Lake. On the shores, ash and mud from the eruption of the volcanoes feed the soil, spurring the growth of plants, which in turn attract insects, birds, and larger wildlife. Most of the soil around is volcanic soil from the eruptions of the volcanoes. There have been studies of potassium in the profiles synlithogenic volcanic soils. Soil provinces of Kamchatka peninsula were found on basis of differences in composition and age of volcanic ashes with surface organogenic horizons of soils formed in it. We would need to grow volcanic resistant crops in my community. The crops would require a ton of water and we should not complement the soil with compost because the rock and volcanic soil would not allow the water to infiltrate. Since it requires so much water we would need various sources of water to come through the soil. Also, because there is not a need for that much compost, we don't have to go the extra mile with that. Because of the various water sources, we could have a ton of fisherman. All of these things will be needed to feed my community.

What is cloning?

Have you ever wished you could have a clone of yourself to do homework while you hung out with your friends? Imagine if you could really do that. Cloning is the creation of an organism that is an exact genetic copy of another. This means that every single bit of DNA is the same between the two.Cloning from adult animals was first introduced in 1997, when the birth of Dolly was announced. Dolly was the first animal cloned in this way.
Cloning actually requires specialized microsurgery tools and 5 basic steps:
1. Enucleation of the recipient egg

2. Transfer of the donor cell into the recipient egg

3. Fusion of the donor cell to the recipient egg

4. Culturing the resulting cloned embryo in the incubator

5. Transferring the developing embryo into the reproductive tract of a surrogate mother

Why is cloning important and what effect does it have on the world?

Molecular Cloning- This allows scientists to not only discover what proteins are present and the function of these proteins, but to also explore what happens in a cell when these proteins are changed.
When studying cell division, scientists look for proteins that control the beginning and end of division. Using the recombinant DNA (containing both the human cell DNA and the cloned plasmid), scientists can direct the replication within the human cells.
This is all very important because by manipulating cells with cloning and learning more about specific proteins, scientists can take their research and apply it to larger-sale research endeavors like diseases and pathogens.
Cloning will have a major impact on the world in so many various ways. Some benefits of animal cloning around the world for example would be that cloning would allow producers to clone their best-performing livestock to improve the consistency and productivity of their herds:
  • To insure against unexpected injuries and losses through multiplication or preservation strategies
  • To select for disease and pest resistance and hardiness and vigor
  • To improve the consistency and quality of meat and milk from their animals
More benefits of cloning would be that cloning could help reproduce plants that are more disease-resistant.
  • Reproducing superior plants, especially those with nutritional superiority, could help address world hunger issues
  • Cloned plants also are more predictable, which could help save a ton of money in farming costs
Also, some cons of cloning could be that fully cloning plant or animal species could result in lack of needed DNA diversity.
- Diversity could help to improve survivability in the future
- Scientists cannot predict potential development of viruses or other agents of destruction

My interest, gut reaction, and connection

Ever since cloning was announced I have always been fascinated by the idea. I think cloning is a huge step in the world of technology. I mean, making two of the same person? That seems crazy and impossible, yet it is not. I fully support cloning in every way. I think cloning people and animals could solves SO many social problems. If you have an incredibly busy day and have to do tons of stuff, you could just do half of the things you need to do and at the same time, the clone could be doing the rest. It would cut down on half the time. I am sure it isn’t that simple but at one point it will be. That is just an example but there are so many ways I believe cloning would deeply improve everything in the world completely. It is a whole new level of technology. I do not have any specific connection to cloning besides the fact I have been interested in the topic ever since it has been announced. Every step of it is very interesting and I think you guys will be interest too!
