As of right now, Taiwan currently has four nuclear power plants that are located on the fault lines of earthquake sites. After the scare with Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant they are looking for a more green approach to provide for their energy needs because they realized, like Japan, they are also prone to earthquakes. Taiwan can not afford to have such a bad disaster if something were to go wrong. Their people rely on the agriculture in this area and farmers would be forced to close down their farms. "DPP Chairperson Tsai Ing-wen, who initiated a proposal for a “nuclear-free homeland by 2025,” recently visited Germany to learn about its energy policy (http://www.taipeitimes.comNews/editorials/archives/2011/06/20/2003506209).

With this goal in the eyes of the Taiwan government they have a few options at hand that they could look into. Some green energy possibilities are tidal energy, hydropower, wind, and solar energy sources. "Most of the suitable hydropower sites in Taiwan have already been developed, so its push for additional renewables capacity will mostly come from solar and wind projects". To develop these solar and wind projects it will cost a fair a bit of money, but will pay off in the end. Depending on the type the type that is decided on. If i were in charge i would say to go with either the wind or the tidal energy options.

If they were to chose the wind option they could always rely on it because the have an ocean breeze comefrom the shore. It would be possible to anchor the windturbine at the water's edge, Taiwan would be guaranteed this wind power plant as a resource. A wind turbine takes the kinetic(moving) energy of the wind and converts it in mechanical energy. This mechanical energy is then used to turn a turbine which moves a generator, and at that generator electricity is created and carried off to homes. With this green energy source available at their finger tips Taiwan will slowly be able to get away from using nuclear energy to power their area.

What is it?
The cause of these earthquakes is not completely resolved, however scientists believe that a main contributor is the fluid which is put into the ground to help the process. Some states like Oklahoma, texas, and Arizona have seen a major increase in the seismic activity of their region. Coincidentally they also realized that the increase goes along with the popularity of fracking. Researchers have done extensive work on the fluid-injection operations. They believe that wastewater injection wells are the main culprit.

What are theimpacts/the importance?
Oklahoma residents have felt over 250 earthquakes, whereas decades ago it would be no more than one to three PER YEAR. However, the worst one yet was an earthquake in 2011 with a magnitude of 5.7 that damaged OVER 200 buildings, they believe that it was "likely caused by fluid injection" These earthquakes that are being caused by injection of fluid into the ground and are a serious business if they can do that much damage and get to be that awful.

What is your interest?
At first, I didn't really understand how putting water into the ground made these awful earthquakes but then I read around a little more and i realized that they are extremely severe and can cause great amount of danger if they do not get the attention they need quickly enough.

My society is Taiwan which is located in a tropical rainforest biome thrives off of their farms. Because this country uses agricultural as a main source of food they are able to create as little waste as possible by practicing the R's, Reduce Reuse and Recycle. However, their are lots of farming households that use their own crops they produce to support their families. These farming households generate a large amount of waste because they do not have the types of advances that a large industrial farm has to get rid of their waste. In any situation it is best to reduce the amount of waste that you produce in your area, but that is not as practical as it seems. there are still ways to go about reducing on a farm region. Farms use fertilizer to make their
plants big and strong, and to do this they need to use fertilizers. Once they are done with the fertilizer they have the packaging left over which gets to be thrown out. They have the choice to recycle this packaging if they're able to but that isn't the best option either because recycling takes energy and lots of water to get the job done. So the best way to practice the R's is to just reduce so that you don't even have the problem of a packaging from fertilizer. Fertilizer is good but it can also contamiate the plants that are growing.

In my society there is also industries and households to consider. These two places also produce a considerable amount of waste as well. Although industires definitely produce more than the households, trash is trash and it needs to be disposed of somehow. If it was up to me i would probably have ONE landfill to show everyone that trash never really goes away and to have an incinerator people will probably thing that it does therefore if they have the big landfill taking up space then they wouldn't want to have to throw away things and add to it. I would probably have a MRF on the other side of the island, and depending on how much is recycled i may rebuild another one on the other side.

To promote reducing/reusing I would try my hardest to make all our industries and farms self-sustainable or really cut down on the amount of waste that is produced. As for our hazardous waste that is produced from the industries I'll probably have it shipped out to China since they have places to dispose of them their.

Taking care of Taiwan's waste is no easy job. The population is little however making the right decisions of where to put our trash and how to dispose of it is the hard part.


What is it?
TerraCycling is maybe one of the best ways to recycle, in my opinion. TerraCycle is a national recycling system that makes non-recyclable or hard-to-recycle waste into a wide variety of materials. By collecting all this waste TerraCycle is able to make over 1,500 different products and ship them to places major companies some including, WalMart and Whole Foods. This company was founded in 2001 by Tom Szachy with a goal to reduce the amount of waste that goes to a landfill. At the time the company started with making organic fertilizer and has grown into the "fastest-growing green companies" in the make things like picture frames out of bicycle chains, and Capri-Sun backpacks,and reuse old chip bags.

Why is it important?
TerraCycling reduces the amount of trash that goes into our landfills. It provides a way to get cool unique products that the buyer can feel good about buying. This company upcyles Capri-suns, chip bags, starburst wrappers, pretty much any non-recyclable into something a little bit more usual like a bag or a bracelet.

My interest
At first I had no idea what this was when I saw the word "terracycle" because I never really heard the word for it. Then i looked it up and i was like 'OH! i know this was.' I think that this whole idea of recycling these types of things into cool new products is by far one of the smartest and cutest things. Tom Szachy is very smart for coming up with an idea like this, it truely is "thinking outside of the box". The cool thing about this whole terracycle process is that anyone can sign up for it if you go to their website!

Central Mountain Range

Located 23 degree latitude and 121 degrees longitude, Hualien Taiwan is surrounded by all ocean. Taiwan is about 36,000 sq. km. this country is separated into two parts that is determined by the Central Mountain Range. The east side of Taiwan is distinguished by its long and narrow gorges. However the west side, is full of vast plains. This area experiences an oceanic and subtropical monsoon climate; greatly affected by the different air masses between the continent and ocean during the different seasons. They average about 4 typhoons and 2500 mm of rain annually.

Right now, Taiwan depends greatly on the Central Mountain Range watershed for their fresh water supply. About 24% of their fresh water comes from there. They also depend on reservoirs that are filtered and then sent out to consumers. However all though they accumulate a lot of rainfall throughout the year this water isn't always healthy to use because it is acid rain. Scientists believe that the acid rain they are receiving is coming from the pollution from their mainland of China. Hualien has been realizing that they are going to suffer greatly of a water shortage if they don't something about it and quickly.

Taiwan is having a hard time managing their rain water correctly. They have lots of unused
water that is used during irrigation that just runoffs into the ocean and nearby rivers. Because Hualien cannot manage their water resources correctly they have to wait for typhoons to hit, but this is not always the best thing either. Their weather patterns are totally unpredictable because of global warming, not only that when typhoons do hit, although they bring water they also bring lots of disaster as well. Their shortage of water is also because of the pollution they have in the area. Taiwan has a high population with lots of factories. Most of their pollution comes from industrial emission and raw sewage that runs into water resources

They have tried water rationing such as rain barrels and trying to catch runoff that flows off the edge of mountains. Water rationing is not the best answer they have realized though because it is an inconvenience to the public and causes economic losses.

I would make a large impact on Taiwan's water situation. I would start with the little things like organic fertilizers and plants along rivers to prevent the water from getting any more polluted because of runoff from other areas. Then I would make it known to the general public that they're is a water issue and the scarcity of water is quickly approaching. So the citizens better make sure that they conserve their water and do not flush any medications down the toilets to further pollute their water. Then I would start building bigger with my ideas. I would improve the water recycling in industrial areas. A big thing that I would do is a wastewater treatment plant to help purify the water that is polluted to then send back to the people of Taiwan. This would also help with the recycling of the water that we do have. However this is not cheap, especially because only 20% of the population is served with public sewage. Compared to other areas like Taipei and Kaohsiung that have 60%-40% connection to wastewater plants. We would have to connect households to these treatment plants. Although this is not cheap ,in the end it will pay because Taiwan will have a water resource that they can depend on. In the mean time while those installations are in progress I would keep the town informed on the progress that we are making and continue to talk about things like organic fertilizers, plants along rivers, and also Irrigation Treatment Associations to help manage the runoff into the rivers. There is certainly more work to be done in the areas of water conservations but if nothing gets done quickly and efficiently, Taiwan will become one thirsty place to say the least.

What is it?
A LifeStraw is a portable water purification tool that cleans dirty surface water into water that is healthy enough for people to drink. At about 29 cm long and 29 mm in diameter, LifeStraw filters about 1000 liters of water by successfully removing the micro organisms that cause deadly diseases.

Impact on the World
Having a LifeStraw can prevent diseases like diarrhea, dysentery, typhoid, and Cholera. This water tool can kill bacteria like Shigella, Salmonella, Enterrococus, Staphylococcus Aureus and E.Coli. What is so amazing about this tool is that anybody can utilize it whether you are an adult or a child, as long as you have the ability to suck up water. Lots of tests have been done by independent and qualifies research laboratories so it is a product you can trust. This tiny tool can be easily worn around anyones neck, requires no energy, and has no additional parts. However, there are minor set-backs about the LifeStraws. This product is only able to be used for a year or for 1000liters of water. Beyond the expiration the tool will no longer do its job. Fortunately, Lifestraws are not that expensive, and go for about 20 dollars. The LifeStraw filter is also only to be used by one person, and it is not recommended to share with other people. Although this may not be a problem in countries like America places like Africa, for example, may not be able to access a LifeStraw as easily as we are able to.

My Interest
This is a truly amazing product from what I've read and watched. I have never heard of such a thing, and it struck me from the moment I heard about it. I almost could not believe at first that their was such a thing, that is able suck up super dirty water, then turn it into pure drinking water. So many people in this world are unable to locate a freshwater supply, now with LifeStraw its right at their fingertips. In the atricles I have read this purification filter has been able to prevent thousands of deaths already.
So many people every year pass away since they don't have any clean water because it either is to costly or requires electricity. This amazing invention requires neither of those things, and is so beneficial to many people.

My community is 26 degrees North and 154 degrees East, located in Taiwan. Because the country is surrounded by the ocean it causes an ocean breeze, making the air feel humid. All throughout the year, Taiwan welcomes its visitors with pleasant climates and an average temperature of 71.6 degrees F. right through the middle of the country, the Tropic of Cancer brings both tropical and subtropical weather, but mostly tropical. A tropical rainforest biome is one of the most beneficial biomes out there. It has optimal growing conditions like abundant percipitation and year round warmth. Although there is one thing missing in a Tropical Rainforest, access to the sun. With all the trees the sun cannot get through the canopy. In this area, you could do a lot of things to make sure the population has a sustainable source of food.


Right now about 24% of the land is under cultivation. Taiwan's annual rice production exceeds demand. Because of a change in diet preferences Taiwan has seen that rice is no long popular and they now grow sweet potatoes, bananas, soybeans, wheat, sugar, pineapples, and citrus fruits. The growing scarcity of land in Taiwan is causing serious disagreements over land resources between agricultural, industrial, and housing. Another problem is all of the monsoons that come through the area sweep away all the nutrients, over water the plants, and the soil gets ruined. In my community I would change how things are grown now to being grown by aquaculture. Aquaculture is a farming of aquatic organisms such as fish crustaceans and aquatic plants in water. Although this will include a lot of preparation and money I think it would be worth it considering Taiwan is surrounded by the ocean.

What is it?
Due to the world quickly growing and all the pollution creating global warming, a food shortage is quickly turning into a big problem. Although it has already hit a couple of places, who do not have nearly as much technology or money as the United States, such as Africa and parts of South America. Ever wonder why prices have gone up so much and nearly doubled the last couple of years? It's simply because of global warming, the worlds climate is changing and the plants are dying. Having a food shortage from global warming is sadly the harsh reality all people have to face someway or another. Thankfully, people and scientists have begun to determine ways to avoid the shortage or postpone it.


Why is knowing about food shortages IMPORTANT?
Although lots of people are trying to prevent a food shortage, it is still a good thing to know about it. If a food shortage comes to the Unites States its a matter of life or death which would send people into a life of starvation and chaos. Reading about the subject, has made me more aware but how hectic it could be and what are a couple of ways to deal with it. Why I'm interested
We have been told to recycle for the longest time I remember it becoming a really big thing in elementary school. I always wondered why we even had to recycle, yeah I understood it helps prevent less trash, but it also prevents global warming, which prevents food shortages, i realized it really is just a big circle. I wanted to read more about how to prevent shortages and what are some ways to help the planet.
